Harry's : Finally, Clarity on What’s in My Dog’s Bowl
I have owned dogs for as long as I can remember, but for the longest time I’ve always felt a little clueless about dog food ingredients lists. It has always been a struggle to really understand what I was feeding my pups, as those lists can be very confusing! Ingredients are not always clearly or transparently described, and it can be difficult to know what’s good, what’s bad, what to avoid, etc.
The International Glossary of Dog Food Ingredients has changed all of that for me. This book (eBook or print) is an incredibly thorough guide, with every imaginable ingredient described and explained, from the standard proteins, grains, and produce, to the hard-to-understand-bytes that many of us often gloss over or ignore altogether. What I like most is that it is very balanced. The author gives no judgment or opinion about whether ingredients are good or bad, rather simply explains what they are, where they come from, and how they benefit (or harm) a dog’s health.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about what their dogs are eating and would like to be able to navigate the confusing world of dog food ingredients without getting misled by marketing or labeling. I plan to keep it by my side for years to come and have it proudly displayed on my kitchen shelf next to the jar of treats.
Sabine's : An Eye Opener
The book goes through every possible dog food ingredient and rates and explains it. An enormous amount of work and knowledge went into this book. The explanations for each ingredient are easy to understand and well-researched, complete with references. The idea is to look at the first five ingredients of each dog food and assign scores from 1 - 5. Acceptable dog foods should score > 15. I checked my usual dog food against it and was dismayed. Then, I tried to find a better dog food, and most were below 12, and only one scored 16. I haven't looked at fresh dog food yet, so maybe that's a better option.
